If you are thinking of visiting Coos Bay, you might already have a few ideas of where you would like to visit. Some of the top tourist attractions in Coos Bay include the Egyptian Theatre and the Coos Bay Iron Works Museum.

If you are interested in learning more about Coos Bay, but you would rather spend your time browsing on Facebook or playing Partypoker than reading through dozens of travel guides, then this blog post is perfect for you. Below are some bite sized historical facts about Coos Bay; this means you don't have to spend hours reading through various tourist books in order to learn some interesting facts.

Fact 1.
The English sea captain, Sir Francis Drake, was thought to have come to Cape Arago in 1579 in search of shelter for his ship, the Golden Hinde. In addition, it has been rumoured that explorer and trader, Jedediah Smith, came to Coos Bay in search of furs.

Fact 2.
In 1999, a Japanese ship named the New Carissa, ran onto the beach and almost reached the entrance of Coos Bay. Luckily, nobody was on the beach at the time, but it brought international attention to the town. The ship, which was empty at the time, was intending to go to Coos Bay Port to pick up a cargo of wood. It is estimated that 70,000 US gallons was spilt from the vessel and around 255,000 gallons was set alight.

Fact 3.
The famous Egyptian Theatre was in fact a service station before it was transformed into an aspiring piece of Egyptian Revival style architecture in 1925. The historic movie theatre, which seats 770 people, has been listed on the US National Register of Historic Places, as well as being announced as the featured listing on the National Park Service list in June 2010.
