COOS BAY, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) has announced the hiring of Mike Herbert to replace longtime SWOCC athletic director John Speasl.  The athletic director position organizes and monitors the 16 athletic programs and related activities at the college.  Herbert will also continue to coach women’s basketball.

An employee of SWOCC since 2007, Herbert worked the last three years as a physical education instructor and head coach of the women’s basketball team.  Herbert was recently awarded tenure by the college and coached the women’s basketball team to the NWAACC basketball tournament.  Previous to his employment at SWOCC, Herbert filled many roles in education and coaching, most recently in the Fort Worth area of Texas.  He has taught physical education at the junior high school and college level while coaching basketball at the high school, junior college, and NCAA Division II levels.

Herbert earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of New Mexico in 2007.  He also holds a Master of Science in Kinesiology from Humboldt State University and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Sonoma State University.

“I am honored for the opportunity to continue to share my knowledge and experiences with the student-athletes of SWOCC in a more administrative role,” said Herbert.  “Nobody can immediately replace John Speasl, but I look forward to being a part of the long tradition that he has created here at SWOCC.”

Speasl started at SWOCC 38 years ago as a Health and Physical Education Instructor.  He coached wrestling from 1973-77 and 1979-87, coached volleyball since 1979, and became athletic director in 1986.  Speasl was named OCCAA Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1980 and 1981, NJCCAA Jr. Pan American Coach in 1984, and NWAACC Regional Coach of the year in 1985, 1990, and 2005. He joined the Northwest Champions in 1994 and was presented with the Dutch Triebwasser Award in 1995, given to the NWAACC’s most outstanding administrator.  The home court for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling was named in his honor last fall.

SWOCC is in the Southern Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) conference.  The wrestling team participates in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
